Q: Why do I get random text characters when I open this downloaded graphic?
A: The graphic may not belong to GIFConverter or any other GIF program. When you downloaded it with the America Online software, it downloaded as text, and is owned by the America Online software.
To fix this, double-click GIFConverter and then use the Open command on the File menu to open the graphic. If you click on "look inside some files" and "fix file types" then the graphic will be marked so that it opens GIFConverter when you double-click it.
Q: I'm trying to open a file by double-clicking it. I've got GIFConverter, but I get a message "The file could not be opened because the application program that created it could not be found."
A: This means the file didn't belong to GIFConverter. Assuming that you've got GIFConverter unpacked, you can either drop the file icon onto the GIFConverter icon or double-click GIFConverter first, and then use the Open command on the File menu to open GIFConverter.
Q: Why does my background pattern change colors when I open a file with GIFConverter? Why does my Apple menu change from colors to black?
A: GIFConverter makes a request to the Mac OS to provide the best set of colors for displaying your picture. This may cause the background pattern or the menus or other features to change color.
The Mac OS restores the colors when GIFConverter quits. Also, if you switch to another program that makes color requests, then the colors will switch automatically for that program. Note: the Finder does not request colors.
You won't see this effect at all if you choose thousands or millions of colors in the Monitors control panel.
Q: GIFConverter says it needs more memory. What do I do?
A: Here's what you have to do:
1) First, quit GIFConverter and go to the Finder.
2) Find GIFConverter's icon.
3) Click on it.
4) Choose Get Info from the File menu.
5) Increase the preferred memory size to the amount requested by GIFConverter.
6) Close the Info box.
Remember, however, that the Mac OS can't give more memory than you have. Check the About this Macintosh window in the Finder to see what the largest block of memory is.
If you don't have enough physical memory to support running GIFConverter in a bigger memory partition, then check the Memory control panel and see if you can turn on virtual memory.
